Sitting till bedtime…

Joe and Shane

Today we listen to stories told by strangers from New York, Nashville, and Los Angeles and we tell our stories to the police and psychiatrists.

Over the past 6 years I have had the good fortune of living in the same suburban neighborhood of Livonia Michigan; some call it Clements Circle, others “the hood”, and to a few its known as “the SuperHood”.

Looking back its hard to measure the value of living in a neighborhood where you can know your neighbors. I am especially fortunate seeing as a good handful of my neighborhood relationships trace their roots back to college, almost 10 years ago now.

Getting to know people takes time. The pace of today’s scattered life activity hardly encourages the slow process of becoming known and knowing your neighbors. Fortunately I have some very hospitable neighbors, and a dog that likes to get around the neighborhood… so I have been able to meet a few over the past 5 years.

Joe Chapp helped me (I watched mostly, note the difference in shirt soiling above) pull out a couple of especially stubborn bushes back in 2005 and since then I have been invited out to a regular evening bonfire complete with pizza and box wine. In these evenings of casual neighborhood discussion and story telling I have learned much about the Chapp family history, struggles, and whimsical life enjoyments. There is a strange sort of comfort that comes from this activity of simply sharing, life just makes a lot of sense when presented in this context.

And aside from the general feelings of comfortableness there are specific encouragements and challenges. I learned that the Chapp family prays for the neighborhood regularly, including the success of my business; what a humbling honor. I also learned that the bus comes at 7:50 and it would mean a lot to the Chapps’ if I would look out for their daughter and make sure she makes it onto the bus without incident. Talk about tangible community responsibility and a reason to get up on time.

People used to practice what they called “sitting till bedtime”, where neighbors used to walk across the fields to sit in someone else’s home until dark and then go home and they would tell stories about themselves and people who had died and the children would hear the stories.

I never thought I would have my very own unemployment line stories to share; but after nearly six months of collecting the precious funds and several trips to the dispute resolution center to keep the cash flowing… I now have the humbling experience of financial neediness in my recent past, present situation, and short term future… and I am pretty sure it is one of the best things that have ever happened to me.

I am getting on my feet and figuring out how to run a business, 2009 actually looks to be quite promising. This promise does come with a fair amount of anxiety, but I am getting better at recognizing the rightful source of each day’s anxiety and adjusting my perspective accordingly. Some days there is nothing to shake a stick at, and you just have to chalk it up to the fear of the unknown. Other days are especially good, and it is only appropriate to be thankful…

My friends are cool…

I consider myself to be very fortunate to have some of the coolest friends around.

Take my friends Sarah and Mandy for example. They took it upon themselves to make custom cheesy Christmas cards for everyone… not e-cards mind you; these are honest to God tangible, authentic, delivered in a paper envelope Christmas cards. Ok, so they printed them at Walgreens… but still. It’s also true that I received a bunch of Hallmark cards this year from various friends and relatives, and I sent out none. But, I said my friends are cool, not me.

Technically I contributed to this cards creation, although I claim no rights to its genesis, I was the photographer of the moment…

Now imagine you are surrounded by thousands of tiny sea horses…. CLICK, ok… I think that’s going to turn out real nice…

Why do I take the time to fire up my trusty blog and write a post about this on the cyberwebs? Well I think this is the stuff of intention that is going to last out the coming subprime facebook induced relational crises of the 22nd century. I am starting to truly believe that we are building networks of “life streaming” that are all together unsustainable and dehumanizing. Thanks for the bail out Sarah and Mandy.

I am on the verge of a new years commitment to write a letter by hand to every friend I have on facebook… numbering near 250 now. I may do some un-friending between now and 2009… its nothing personal… and that’s the problem…

Big Bell Box…

Big Bell Box

Just when I thought I had grown up and found “better” alternatives to trusty Taco Bell, they come out with this… its hard to pass up for $5. Its the Cinnamon Twists that really put it over the top, its usually hard to justify paying for the sugared Styrofoam… but here they are included with the meal!

  • One Club Chalupa
  • One Crunchy Taco
  • One Bean Burrito
  • One order of Cinnamon Twists
  • And of course, a bottomless beverage

What more could you ask for? Way to go Taco Bell!

I am an independent film producer. Independent in the sense that I have just myself and a few friends to team up with on a project. The budgets are determined by us, how much do we want to spend on our movie. These days “independent” movies are popular, mostly because there are a lot of good indie films done through spin off mini studios from the big boys. They receive huge budgets and resources compared to anyone like myself. They also have actual experience… unlike myself… I am a few notches below experienced when it comes to “making movies for real”. Most people that create films with my level of experience end up with something that no one really wants to watch… I have made a few of those. So when you find a truly indie film that is actually watchable… even compelling… its note worthy. These guys are my heroes…

Blazer down… but not out…

The Blazer is in the shop again. Got home from Europe and all the oil had leaked out, I filled it up and drove it for a 1000 miles. Then the noises start… then the 4 wheel drive goes… then the fuses blow… but I still drive it for another 2000 miles. Scheduling car repairs is a night mare so I put it off, hopefully I have not destroyed the whole front end… it sounds like a tank everywhere I go and when I get it up to 65 it feels like the tires are about to warble off… not good.

Something like this happens at least once a year… usually more often… and if I want it back fixed it always costs at least $500. I pay gladly. Because I love my blazer and I believe it is destined for 300,000 mile greatness. I suppose I have inherited my car habits from my father… the rules are simple.

  1. You never buy a new car
  2. You pay somebody to fix when it breaks
  3. You run it into the ground

I plan on sticking to these rules, on occasion I will fix something myself just so I feel manly… but I don’t really trust my own car repair work… and when you live in Detroit, you can’t do anything without a car… so you don’t chance it.

Today I Yacked…

March 13, 2006 12:08 am
Yack

Yea, that’s egg down there. Today I yacked, and it felt great.  Its been a long time since I did something with enough ferocity to work up my stomach into a good healthy vomit.  I started mountain biking with my brother last summer.  He invites me out for a brutal 11mile beat down as often as possible.  I am out of shape, each time we go I get a little bit stronger but a lot more aware of how underutilized my muscular system is.  I don’t work out very hard at all, so I am not accustom to planning for such an afternoon of fatigue.  I didn’t eat any breakfast.  When I got to my brothers he whipped me up some ham, a bagel, and three eggs… sunny side up.  I ate it all, thinking I would need the protein to make it through.  At about the 6 mile mark, my body violently rejected the protein.  After I got it out, I felt great.  We went on to finish the last 5 miles in record time… okay we finished anyways.  But I did feel a lot better.  This whole pushing yourself thing is really worth something.  Normally if I have an upset stomach, I take a nap… maybe I need to go running until I vomit and then get on with life, hooraaa.  Isn’t that what the marines scream when they do 500 push ups and jump through a wall of barbed wire.  Ya, I felt that cool.

Nominated, or awarded, or something…

ACEC Award Preview

So I seemed to have been nominated for an award of recognition of sorts.  I am not really sure if I won or not or what it means, but regardless my picture is in a magazine, and that always seems to do wonders for a man’s ego.  Here I am hanging out with Marie, Craig, Laura, and Kawika…  ‘New Faces of Engineering’.  Little secret, I am really not an engineer.  I just happen to think like one about half of the time.  But I am really not an engineer.  I have a degree in engineering, but I am really not an engineer.  I may work with engineers on engineering projects, but I’m really not an engineer.  Or am I?
