Server Fire…
June 2, 2008 5:38 pmThese are two words that I never wanted to read next to each other. In my world of fragile technology strung together by bits of wire, IP addresses, and a few lines of code… I am completely vulnerable to the forces of nature.
All the tech support in the world can’t help you when the thing catches on fire and burns to a crisp.
So, I was a little bit worried this weekend, when my hosting company informed me that there was a small fire at their datacenter in texas. A small fire that immedietly followed a small explosion that knocked down 3 walls and successfully took down about 9,000 servers. One of which happened to be mine… the proud home of shanesevo.com
More backup scheming is in order… I now have a new quest… how to setup redundant servers in different buildings, states, or countries…
Now that it is over, I do have to give props to my Hosting Company (HostGator) and their datacenter (ThePlanet). They did a great job taking a disaster and turning into just a couple days of downtime without any data loss… that makes me happy… some companies would just give up and let their servers get turned into digital BBQs.

Pleased to read there was no permanent data loss, though a few more PC barbeque’s would be cool (well hot)
Dude… isn’t this your busy season? Hey we still have to get together sometime. I’m on another mission trip in a week, but after July 12th sometime would work for me.
Later,
Todd
