Failing hard disks are the bane of my existence. I recently dug through my PC junkyard and did a quick catalog of all the dead drives that I could not bare to throw out over the past decade.

27 Dead Hard Drives

I have lost hard drives in my…

  • personal computers
  • laptop
  • corporate server
  • personal business server
  • i-pod
  • external backup drive
  • double redundant external backup drive

I have spent a lot replacing these drives, and at times it has even cost me sleep. It’s not a recurring dream… but I have had a very vivid nightmare of dying hard disk as part of my super redundant RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks)… loosing one hard drive does not result in any data loss… but two… thats curtains… In my dream I loose two drives and frantically attempt to recover my lost data through all of my backup schemes each one resulting in another form of technology induced failure…

Imagine a giant domino course consisting of 30 foot tall hard disks clunking against each other as I run in front of them, narrowly escaping being squashed by each falling disk. I am happy to escape being crushed but I wince with each crash as I hear the platters crackle with the loss of data due to the trauma of the fall.

I did not exactly wake in a cold sweat, but it did take me a while to believe it was not happening for real… I think about my data way too much…
