Blazer down… but not out…
November 9, 2007 8:54 pmThe Blazer is in the shop again. Got home from Europe and all the oil had leaked out, I filled it up and drove it for a 1000 miles. Then the noises start… then the 4 wheel drive goes… then the fuses blow… but I still drive it for another 2000 miles. Scheduling car repairs is a night mare so I put it off, hopefully I have not destroyed the whole front end… it sounds like a tank everywhere I go and when I get it up to 65 it feels like the tires are about to warble off… not good.
Something like this happens at least once a year… usually more often… and if I want it back fixed it always costs at least $500. I pay gladly. Because I love my blazer and I believe it is destined for 300,000 mile greatness. I suppose I have inherited my car habits from my father… the rules are simple.
- You never buy a new car
- You pay somebody to fix when it breaks
- You run it into the ground
I plan on sticking to these rules, on occasion I will fix something myself just so I feel manly… but I don’t really trust my own car repair work… and when you live in Detroit, you can’t do anything without a car… so you don’t chance it.
Right now I am at the mercy of public transportation and friends for rides… which means I am totally at the mercy of my friends. You would think that after traveling Europe for 3 months with nothing but a rail pass and a back pack that I would be a master of public transportation. We’ll i’m not in Europe any more… there are a few things working against me, but more than anything… I just don’t want to try to use a buss… American habits die hard. I thought about getting a moped for a while… but I live in Michigan…
Well it’s Friday night about 8:00 pm and I am stranded at work, its not so bad… I finally get a chance to do the work I told everyone I was going to do all day; and I get better acquainted with the cleaning folks. Regardless I am a bit dissapointed in my resourcefulness… I should be able to find a way without a car and not be a huge burden on my room mates (thanks Dan and Paul)… perhaps this is a challenge for lent… no car… no begging for 40 days. Can it be done?
