Phil Collins is Awesome…
October 18, 2007 9:52 pmWell, I guess I was about 5, maybe 6, when I first heard “Invisible Touch”. I was at a friends house and we were listing to his tape collection… and I was suddenly grasped by a rapture of drums and vocals like I had never experienced before. I loved the song and I had no idea what it was about. I remember proudly proclaiming to my friends at 6 years old that “Invisible Touch” by Genesis was my favorite song. I bought the tape, I still remember the funky looking graphic design hand on the jacket, and I proceeded to wear it out in my trusty Walkman. Those were the days of complete awesomeness in music… I could just like music… just because; INXS, Bon Jovi, Salt and Pepper, Bruce Springsteen… it did not matter.
I never went to concerts all that much as a kid or teenager… not until my mid twenties did I really appreciate it. Now I think about all the bands I would love to see in person, now that I understand the concert to be the most appropriate way to experience music. Phil Collins was high on my list… it is quite possible that he was at the top of the list… not too sure how much longer he’s going to be around. So anyway, I finally antied up and bought a set of tickets when I heard he was going to be in town… and I took the best fellow appreciator of Phil that I knew of, Johny Losen of the SuperTrip and Bethany Bible past.
Phil Collins knows more about love than any other man who has ever lived…(according to Johnny Losen)
That could be true, and I am realizing that I still don’t really know what most of the music of Genesis is about… those guys can be a bit mysterious. I think I learned at this concert that my second favorite track “Mama” is about a prostitute… the evening had several moments that were well beyond my 7 year old appreciation level… but perfect for me now. Why is it that I somehow feel complete hearing Phil use the big profane “F” bomb in my favorite song?
…she will F*&k (normally “mess”) up your life, but you want her just same…
Perhaps it is just evidence that I am not that much more mature than I was at 7, but somehow sitting in the balcony of the Palace of Auburn Hills surrounded by 45-50 year old couples and hearing Phil lay down an emphatic F bomb in my favorite Genesis song brought me to a new plane of grownupness… now I understand a little bit of what that song is about from experience… and its definitely worth cussing about. But the cool thing about Phil (and Genesis) is that they don’t take themselves too serious… they are the coolest British dorks I know…
