God’s Total Surrender to Us
March 14, 2006 9:59 amBeware of talking about surrender if you know nothing about it.
Well I suppose I ought to consider whether I should try to say anything about this other than agreeing that I don’t know anything about it. When, how, and to who have I surrendered. Total and complete surrender, I am not sure that I know anything of that. Surrendering to people or circumstances at least gives you something to shake a stick at, but surrender to God? Here again, I think the process becomes difficult to describe. We are supposed to be fully surrendered to God’s will. How does God communicate His will. I have been taught that he does so through the Word of God, other Christians, circumstances or experience, and the most mysterious of all… the Holy Spirit. Living a surrendered life to the conglomerate of these influences is enough to drive a sincere person to frustrating madness. And at the same time, I always usually have familiar feelings that accompany disobedience and obedience… I know when I’m holding out.
To say that we are called to preach holiness or sanctification is to miss the main point.
It’s easy to get preoccupied with the moral benefits of Christianity. Often times I believe we would rather use Christianity as a tool or serum to fix our shortcomings than to ask Jesus for forgiveness and get on with what He has called us to. We are like children who steal from our parents and then try to make up for our guilt by doing extra chores or refusing to go out and play. If we would just face them and come clean we could go on, but the moment of honesty is too daunting.
John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
